Team GB at the Winter Olympic Games
Every four years, the Winter Games shine a spotlight on some of the world’s most demanding and exciting winter sports. From the high speed of alpine skiing to the precision of curling, Team GB continues to compete on the global stage, inspiring athletes and winter sports enthusiasts across the UK.
As interest in skiing, snowboarding and other winter activities grows, the Winter Games also serve as a reminder that these sports come with unique risks, so we advise checking and purchasing the correct cover in case disaster strikes.
Team GB and the Winter Olympic Games
Team GB competes across a wide range of winter sports, including alpine skiing, snowboarding, skeleton, bobsleigh and curling. Over recent Games, British athletes have achieved historic successes, particularly in disciplines such as skeleton and curling, where preparation, skill and mental resilience are key.
While elite athletes benefit from professional support teams and specialist cover, recreational skiers and snowboarders face many of the same environmental challenges – just without the safety net. A solid insurance policy could offer recreational winter sport enthusiasts the safety net they need in case anything were to go wrong. From stolen equipment to injury, a good insurance policy can provide peace of mind.

Mia Brookers broke records, becoming the nation’s first-ever world champion in Georgia back in 2023. In 2022, when the Beijing Winter Games rolled around, Mia was only 15 years of age.

Kirsty Muir (Freeski)
The comeback of a lifetime for Kirsty Muir! After a torn ACL was revealed back in 2023, Kirsty was forced to take time off the slopes to recover from her injury.
However, just two months after her return, Kirsty competed in Tignes, France, only to reach the top of the podium and take her first-ever win at the top level.
Muir has recently taken her third World Cup win in slopestyle free skiing, taking t the podium once again in Aspen.

Adele Nicoll (Bobsleigh)
Many of you might be surprised to know that Adele’s usual sport was always shotput, being the national shotput champion. However, back in 2020, Adele decided to step into the world of Bobsleigh as a reserve team member to help her Team GB Bobsleigh team finish 17th at the Beijing 2022 Winter Games. As of January 2026, Adelle now has two World Cup medals to her name so she will be hungry for a victory out in Cortina.

Inspired by Team GB? What You Should Check Before You Travel
Before setting off on a winter sports holiday, it’s important to consider:
- The activities you’ll be taking part in
- Whether you’ll ski off-piste or use snow parks
- If you’re travelling as a family, group or frequent skier
- Any pre-existing medical conditions
Being upfront about your plans helps ensure your policy provides the protection you actually need.
For travellers inspired by Team GB to try something new on the slopes, having the right cover in place provides peace of mind from the first run to the last.
Why Standard Travel Insurance Isn’t Always Enough
Many travellers assume their standard travel insurance will cover skiing or snowboarding, but this isn’t always the case. Winter sports are often excluded or only partially covered unless specifically added to a policy.
This is why specialist winter sports insurance is essential for anyone heading to the slopes, which can cover the costs for:
- Sport equipment damage or theft
- Medical expenses
- Mountain rescue
- Repatriation in the event of a serious injury.
