Why do I need entry refund protection insurance?
As an event organiser, it can be a real administrative frustration and additional cost dealing with customers who pull out of an event and ask for a refund – so much so that many organisers specify ‘no refunds’ in their T&Cs. Generally, clear terms and conditions will reduce arguments. Still, either the event or the entrant will likely be left out of pocket, perhaps both, and it is rarely a satisfactory solution.
An increasingly popular alternative is insurance: if customers are purchasing their entry online, they can also purchase cover that will refund their entry costs if they are unable to attend due to unexpected reasons beyond their control.
If the entrant can’t attend for a valid reason, then the insurance company will refund 100% of their entrance price. It can even refund the cost of a doctor’s certificate if appropriate. Why might someone need to cancel their ticket?
- Illness
- Injury
- Home/family emergency
- Jury service
- Transport failure
- Adverse weather
- Armed Forces posting
- Redundancy or work relocation
- Changes to exam dates
- Other genuine reasons.

So how much does refund cover cost?
The cover costs the event organiser absolutely nothing! The cover cost is added on top of the entry price and is based on a small percentage of the entry costs. As an event organiser, you can add a further percentage to give you an additional income stream and help with administrative overheads.
What type of events is refund cover suitable for?
In simple terms, the cover works for any tickets or entries purchased online. For example:
- Races: running, cycling, triathlon, OCR, swims, ultras, etc
- Spectator events: sporting fixtures, concerts, festivals, theatre, etc
- Travel: hotels, holidays, tours, visitor attractions, vehicle hire, etc.
