Howzat for cover?
Your cricket club’s season depends on far more than what happens on the pitch. From managing facilities and equipment to organising events and protecting volunteers, there are plenty of responsibilities behind the scenes, and that’s why it’s important to regularly review your club’s insurance arrangements.
One thing that might be at the bottom of the pile, but is essential, is your club’s insurance. We understand it is very easy to just click ‘renew’, but when was the last time you reviewed your club’s insurance? Are you getting the best value for money? Do you have the right cover? Do you need comparative quotes to show your committee?
As clubs continue to grow and diversify, insurance needs can quickly change. From junior cricket programmes and women’s teams to social events and fundraising activities, your policy should reflect everything your club is involved in, not just matchdays.
What insurance does a cricket club need?
We know that no two cricket clubs are the same, so what you need will be different. Whether a small club needing ‘the basics’ or a larger club with more considerations, the types of cover could include:
Protecting people
Protecting property
- Clubhouse
- Pitches
- Kit & equipment
Protecting events & income
- Tours & travel
- Legal expenses
- Match cancellations
- Tournaments and events
Can I insure my equipment?
Many clubs also now invest heavily in grounds machinery, sight screens, covers, scoreboards and electronic equipment, all of which can be costly to repair or replace if damaged, stolen or vandalised.
What about coaches?
If you are a coach within a club, you will normally be covered by your club’s policy. However, if you coach elsewhere or in a business, then we can also help you with a specific coaching policy. Specialist coaching insurance can help protect against claims arising from injury, professional negligence or incidents during training sessions, giving coaches peace of mind both on and off the field.
What else might I need to consider?
If your club employs staff, runs a bar, hires out facilities or hosts community events, there may also be additional insurance considerations that should be discussed with a specialist broker.
One of the biggest issues we see is clubs assuming all activities automatically fall under one policy. Midweek leagues, cricket camps, charity matches or separate social events may need to be specifically declared to ensure cover remains valid.
Why choose Mann Broadbent?
Doug Kaye, account executive, Mann Broadbent, commented: “We don’t profess to know how to coach winning cricket teams, but we do know how to take a lot of the worry away that comes with running a cricket club. For example, what happens if the clubhouse is wrecked by the weather or vandals? What will you do if your kit gets damaged or stolen? What if a coach or player gets injured? All worrying scenarios, and all things we can help with through tailored insurance.
“We’ve been specialising in sports insurance since the company was set up by a first-class cricket umpire in 1961, so we know what we’re talking about!”
