Why does a hostel, bunkhouse or bothy need insurance?
Owners need to cover against liability incidents such as trips, slips and injuries to visitors and staff. They also need to cover against material losses and damage such as theft, flood, storm and fire.
However, it can sometimes be difficult to find insurance.
Some hostels offer luxury and service to a standard that puts hotels to shame, others are just four walls and a roof. Some offer secure private accommodation and restaurant facilities whilst others are unlocked and communal with cooking on the floor. Insurance companies like to insure things that are standard, uniform and tick all their boxes. Unfortunately the word ‘hostel’ can mean a wide range of things and underwriters often find it easier to decline something they cannot clearly understand.
